The National Conferences on Undergraduate Research is a great opportunity both for your students to present their research to peers and faculty all over the country and for you to meet other faculty and undergraduate research program directors.

Student presentations are welcome in all fields and disciplines from the creative and performing arts to biomedical, engineering, and social science research. The National Conferences on Undergraduate Research provides a wonderful opportunity for your students: (1) to meet peers and faculty from around the country working in similar research fields; (2) to learn about how research and scholarship is conducted in a wide range of fields from the humanities and creative arts to the life sciences and engineering; (3) to learn about graduate school and employment opportunities from our presenters; and (4) to develop presentation skills. All student abstracts and applications will be reviewed by a faculty committee from the host institution. Students presenting at the National Conference have the option of doing either an oral or poster presentation.

As part of the National Conferences, we also offer sessions targeted specifically for faculty and administrators. These sessions are designed to share best practices for undergraduate research and scholarship and provide opportunities for faculty and administrators to meet and share information. The sessions are sponsored by the Faculty and Administrators Network and take place during the break between student presentations each day. The call for proposals for these sessions occurs at the same time as the student call for proposals.

Previous FAN Sessions have included: Community Based Research, Assessment and Evaluation of Undergraduate Research Programs, The Research Rich Curriculum, Running an Office of Undergraduate Research, Research Experiences for Undergraduates: A Multi-Tiered Curriculum Based Approach, Integrating Service Learning and Research in Economics, Creating an Interdisciplinary Social Action Oriented Student-Faculty Research Group, Interdisciplinary Research in Biomedical Engineering, and Expanding Undergraduate Research Throughout the Curriculum: the Humanities and Creative Arts.

Please note: We will not accept presentations for the FAN Sessions from faculty about one’s own disciplinary research.

NCUR Proceedings

Student presenters at NCUR will also have the opportunity to publish their work in the Conference Proceedings edited and produced annually by the University of North Carolina at Asheville and distributed across the nation. All student presenters at the Conference are invited to submit manuscripts for review by the Proceedings Board. Submitting work to the Proceedings can benefit students in several ways:

  • the opportunity to receive comments from faculty outside your own campus enhancing the opportunity to submit the publication for submission to other sources
  • the opportunity for your students to list the publication on their resume for graduate and professional school applications
  • the opportunity to publish in fields in which it is hard to find peer review publications accepting contributions from undergraduates
